LEGO 21369 The X-Files — Reopening a Case That Never Really Closed

LEGO 21369 The X-Files — Reopening a Case That Never Really Closed

Case status: reopened.

More than thirty years after The X-Files first turned dim offices, empty roads and strange lights in the sky into essential television, Mulder and Scully are returning in a rather unexpected form: LEGO bricks.

The upcoming LEGO 21369 The X-Files does not focus on one famous vehicle or recreate a single episode scene for scene. Instead, it gathers several parts of the series into one layered display. Mulder’s basement office sits below a forest encounter, while a hovering UFO hangs above the investigation like a question nobody has managed to answer.

That structure feels right for The X-Files. The series always lived between two worlds: the evidence Scully could document and the possibilities Mulder refused to dismiss.

For collectors who remember flashlight beams cutting through dark woods, files stacked across a basement office and the familiar “I Want to Believe” poster on the wall, LEGO 21369 may feel less like another licensed model and more like an old case being pulled from the archive.

A Case File Built From Familiar Details

The appeal of LEGO 21369 lies in how it brings different kinds of memories together.

Mulder’s office represents the investigative side of the series: crowded files, notes, odd pieces of evidence and theories that seem unreasonable—until they suddenly do not. Above it, the forest clearing and transparent UFO support move the set into more cinematic territory, recalling those moments when an ordinary night became impossible to explain.

The small references may end up being what fans enjoy most. The “I Want to Believe” poster is an obvious one, but details such as the dossier, pencils lodged in the ceiling, Mulder’s sunflower seeds and the “The Truth Is Out There” tile give the build its personality.

None of these elements needs to dominate the model. One oddly placed pencil may be enough to send a longtime viewer straight back to a particular episode or character moment.

That is the clever part. The set does not simply show The X-Files. It invites the viewer to search through it.

Very appropriate, really.

Eight Minifigures, Eight Different Threads

Mulder and Scully naturally hold the centre of the story, but the supporting minifigures prevent the set from becoming a simple office diorama.

Skinner brings the uneasy relationship between authority and loyalty. Mr. X and Krycek point toward the larger conspiracy that ran beneath the monster-of-the-week stories. The Flukeman recalls one of the programme’s more unsettling creatures, while the grey alien introduces the question that always seemed to hover above Mulder’s work.

Even the way the figures are arranged can change the tone of the display. Mulder and Scully might remain in the office while the stranger characters occupy the forest scene. Or the figures could be grouped almost like evidence: agents below, unexplained subjects above.

The minifigures are not there simply to increase the number on the box. They give collectors different ways to retell the series.

From Screen Accuracy to Emotional Accuracy

A television-inspired LEGO set does not need to reproduce every wall, prop and camera angle exactly. What matters more is whether the finished model feels familiar.

In that sense, LEGO 21369 seems to focus on emotional accuracy.

The office is recognisable not only because of its furniture, but because it feels cramped, private and slightly forgotten by the rest of the FBI. The forest scene works because the series repeatedly used darkness and open space to create uncertainty. The UFO above them connects the two worlds without explaining how they fit together.

That may be more faithful to The X-Files than rebuilding one episode in perfect detail. The series rarely gave viewers a complete answer. It gave them evidence, doubt and just enough possibility to keep watching.

Several Ways to Display the Same Mystery

This set also opens up a few different display approaches.

An open shelf keeps the office accessible and allows the figures to be rearranged, though the layered build and small details will naturally collect dust over time.LEGO display shelf and acrylic case idea for The X-Files 21369 A wider acrylic case can preserve the full office, forest and UFO composition as one connected story.Acrylic display case for LEGO The X-Files 21369 collector display Collectors who prefer a cleaner layout may separate the upper diorama and office into two related displays.

A wall-mounted presentation would make the model feel closer to television artwork or a framed case file. A tabletop acrylic display creates a more museum-like effect, allowing the viewer to walk around the build and notice details from several angles.

There is no need to force the set into one fixed interpretation. That flexibility suits the source material. After all, Mulder and Scully rarely agreed on what the evidence meant either.

The DIA Approach: Leave Something Unexplained

Our first DIA concepts tried far too hard.

We added large UFO graphics, conspiracy diagrams, coded files and a heavy green glow. Each element looked dramatic on its own. Together, they removed the mystery. The background started explaining the story before the LEGO model had a chance to speak.

So we stripped it back.

The final direction for the DIA Acrylic Display Case for LEGO® Ideas The X-Files (21369) uses subdued shadows, restrained lighting and more empty space around the office and hovering craft. The acrylic protects the layered build, but the visual design avoids making the scene feel sealed or overly polished.

That process led to a simple idea:

Not every mystery should be filled in. Some displays need room for doubt.

At DIA, we are not trying to recreate a single episode or decide what the UFO means. Collectors already bring their own memories, theories and favourite cases to the model.

The display only needs to hold those pieces together.

Why The X-Files Still Fits LEGO Ideas

The original fan project began with designer Brent Waller rebuilding Mulder’s office while revisiting the series. Over time, the concept expanded to include the forest and UFO, eventually becoming a broader tribute to the show.

That origin feels fitting. LEGO 21369 began with someone returning to a story that still mattered years later.

Many collectors will approach it in much the same way. Some watched the series during its original run. Others discovered it through reruns or streaming. A few may know the famous poster and theme music before they know the individual episodes.

Different generations, same curiosity.

Final Thoughts

The appeal of LEGO 21369 goes beyond its 1,478 pieces, release date and exclusive minifigures.

It captures the structure of The X-Files itself: rational investigation below, unexplained possibility above, and just enough evidence between them to keep the case open.

That is also how DIA approached the display.

Protection matters. Dust control matters. Proportion matters.

But mystery matters too.

At DIA, we do not close the case. We give the unanswered story somewhere to remain.
