The model includes several cues from the real E30 M3, including its square bonnet, compact front air intake and rear wing. Those details matter because the original car’s identity was never built around decoration alone. Its body was shaped by competition.

The Car That Changed the Meaning of M3

The first M3 began as a homologation car developed for touring-car competition. BMW produced the road-going E30 M3 so that a racing version could compete under the regulations of the period, and the result quickly grew beyond that original purpose.

Why the First DIA Concept Was Too Fast

Our early design direction leaned heavily into racing.

There were track lines, stronger motion graphics and a more dramatic sense of speed. The composition looked energetic, but something felt off. The E30 began to resemble any other race car, and the qualities that made it distinctive—its boxy stance and disciplined proportions—were pushed into the background.

So we stepped back.

The track graphics became quieter. More empty space appeared around the roof and rear wing. The Motorsport references stayed, but they stopped shouting. Once the background settled down, the car started to look more confident.

That moment shaped the DIA idea for LEGO 77263:

Do not make the E30 look modern. Give its original shape enough room to speak.

This is the DIA memory point behind the display. We are not placing a car over a generic racing background. We are framing the design decision that made the car memorable in the first place.

Where LEGO 77263 Fits in a Speed Champions Collection

Collectors who already own the BMW M4 GT3 and BMW M Hybrid V8 set can use LEGO 77263 to create a compact visual timeline of BMW Motorsport. The E30 represents the touring-car roots; the M4 GT3 shows a later generation of customer racing; the M Hybrid V8 moves the story into modern endurance competition.

Placed beside Ferraris, Porsches or Aston Martins, the E30 also brings a different type of performance design to the collection. It is less exotic, perhaps, but more closely tied to the idea of a road car transformed through motorsport.
