LEGO 11381 Jaguar E-Type Preview — Why Some Cars Never Stop Turning Heads

LEGO 11381 Jaguar E-Type Preview — Why Some Cars Never Stop Turning Heads

Some cars are fast. Some become valuable. And then there are a handful that seem to escape time altogether.

The Jaguar E-Type belongs to that last group.

More than sixty years after it first appeared at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show, people still pause when they see one. Even those who are not deeply interested in classic cars usually recognise its impossibly long bonnet, low roofline and graceful curves. It does not shout for attention; it simply has a shape that has aged remarkably well.

That is probably why the announcement of LEGO 11381 immediately caught the attention of both LEGO collectors and classic car enthusiasts. Recreating an icon like the E-Type is not simply about matching dimensions or counting bricks. It is about translating one of the most elegant automotive designs ever created into a completely different design language.

That challenge alone makes this one of the most interesting upcoming releases in the LEGO Icons collection.

A Quick Look at LEGO 11381

Before diving into the design itself, here are the essentials collectors are likely searching for.

On paper, it checks many of the boxes fans expect from a modern LEGO Icons vehicle.LEGO Icons Jaguar E-Type 11381 collector display with classic car details The more interesting question, though, is whether it captures the personality of the original.

The Original Jaguar E-Type Was Never Just Another Sports Car

The E-Type arrived during a remarkable period for British automotive design. It offered performance that rivalled far more expensive European sports cars while maintaining a level of elegance that few competitors could match.

Its proportions became its signature. The bonnet stretched forward almost impossibly far. The cabin sat low between the wheels. Every curve seemed to flow naturally into the next without interruption.

Enzo Ferrari reportedly described it as “the most beautiful car ever made.” Whether or not you agree with that statement, it explains why the E-Type continues to appear in museums, private collections and classic car events around the world.

It is also why recreating it with LEGO bricks is far more complicated than it might first appear.

Curves Are Much Harder Than Straight Lines

Many LEGO vehicles rely on sharp edges and flat surfaces, which naturally suit brick construction. The Jaguar E-Type is the opposite.

Its identity comes from subtle curves, soft transitions and uninterrupted body lines. Those qualities are difficult to reproduce using individual plastic elements.

Looking at the official images, LEGO seems to have approached the problem thoughtfully rather than literally. The long bonnet immediately establishes the car's character, while the wire-style wheels and deep green paintwork reinforce its distinctly British identity.

Some compromises are inevitable. Viewed from certain angles, the front appears slightly more angular than the real car. From the side, however, the proportions come together beautifully. That is the angle where the model feels most convincing—and perhaps the closest to the spirit of the original E-Type.

The Details You Notice Only After Looking Closer

What I appreciate most about the model is not the overall shape. It is the collection of smaller decisions that gradually reveal themselves.

Lift the bonnet and you will find a brick-built inline-six engine. Open the boot and there is a compact five-piece toolkit waiting inside. The foldable textile roof completely changes the personality of the car, transforming it from an open summer roadster into something that feels ready for a weekend tour through the English countryside.

None of these details dominates the build on its own. Together, though, they make the model feel less like a display object and more like a miniature classic car.

Displaying a Jaguar Is Different From Displaying a Supercar

Modern supercars often look dramatic from almost any angle. The E-Type is more selective.

Its beauty comes from proportion rather than aggression, which means the way you display it makes a surprising difference.

On an open shelf, a front three-quarter angle highlights the bonnet, grille and front wings. Inside a clear acrylic display case, the uninterrupted side profile becomes easier to appreciate while the model stays protected from dust.

Personally, I find a wall display the most interesting option. Seen from the side, the E-Type begins to resemble one of the elegant automotive sketches designers pin to studio walls. Instead of focusing on functions, your attention naturally shifts toward the silhouette itself—the one detail that made the original car famous.

Why DIA Approached the Jaguar Differently

Designing a display for a Formula 1 car is relatively straightforward. Speed, circuits and motorsport graphics all feel appropriate.

DIA display approach for LEGO Jaguar E-Type 11381 collector presentation

The Jaguar E-Type asks for something entirely different.

When discussing the concept for this frame, we kept returning to one question:

What made people fall in love with the E-Type in the first place?

The answer was not racing. It was not technology. It was proportion.

That idea shaped everything else. Rather than filling the background with visual effects, the design leaves generous negative space around the car. The layout is calm, almost gallery-like, allowing the bodywork to remain the centre of attention.

Even when the model is removed, the frame still feels like a piece of automotive artwork instead of an empty mounting board.

For us, that is what a display should do: not compete with the model, but simply help people notice why it became iconic.

One Model That Connects an Entire Era

One of the things we have noticed at DIA is that collectors rarely stop with a single classic car.

A Porsche 911 leads to an Aston Martin. An Aston Martin leads to a Shelby Cobra. Soon, those individual models become something larger.

Not a collection of LEGO sets. A timeline of automotive design.

The Jaguar E-Type fits naturally into that story because it represents a turning point—a moment when performance and elegance met in unusually convincing balance.

That is why LEGO 11381 feels like more than another LEGO Icons release. It is an opportunity to build one of the cars that helped define an entire generation.

Final Thoughts

No brick-built model can perfectly recreate the flowing surfaces of the original Jaguar E-Type. Perhaps it should not try.

The real achievement of LEGO 11381 is not perfect accuracy. It is preserving the feeling people have when they first see the car.

That brief moment when the proportions make you stop. When the bonnet seems impossibly long. When the curves still feel modern, even after more than six decades.

Some cars become legends because they collect trophies. Others become legends because people never stop looking at them.

The Jaguar E-Type has been doing exactly that since 1961.
